The decision on whether or not to vaccinate has received a lot of media attention. While a majority of parents support the practice of vaccination, a small, yet vocal group of people have garnered enough of a following that many of the preventable diseases are re-appearing in places that previously had herd immunity (Caplan, Diamond, Hoke, & Karshenboyem, 2012). In doing so, preventable communicable diseases that had previously been nearly eradicated from most of the world have begun to re-appear.
The
choice to vaccinate impacts more than the individual—it affects the entire
population on a global scale. It is imperative that nurses understand both the
risks and benefits of vaccination and that nurses thoroughly educate patients.
With the recent rise in vaccine refusals there have and will continue to be
many changes in health care but specifically in the field of nursing. By
educating patients, vaccine compliance can improve.
